Dear Biltmore School Families,

Looking back on the past few years, I find myself thinking that ours has truly been a journey full of successes. The continued growth of our school, together with the challenges that we face as we expand our program and welcome new students is in fact, worthy of celebration. There are not only more eager minds ready to think and learn but there are also more teachers ready to provoke the students’ learning. We also are proud of our continued involvement with Harvard and Project Zero. This past year our school showcased its thinking community in the Visible Thinking Miami Conference, where many of our classes from the Nido, Preschool and Grade school exhibited what part they have in creating a thinking culture. It is exactly this venture into global education that has supported our continued efforts toward IB accreditation. With this, I urge you to participate in celebrating the hard work, dedication and success our school continues to have.

P h i l o s o p h y

The Biltmore School is inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach to Education. We see the child, parent and teachers as capable and knowledgeable. The school creates an environment that allows the child to explore and learn, alongside the teacher and parent. The Biltmore School is based on the philosophy that children should be encouraged to explore their environment. Children'’s experiences are through many different mediums. They discover that they exist and can emerge from anonymity and invisibility. What children say and do IS important. They can be listened, valued, shared and understood. Children are invited to experience their world through a variety of modes and expressions, including collage, dance, literature, nature, paint, pottery, puppet play, sculpture, shadow play, and writing. We create an atmosphere of acceptance and support, which develops and enhances the child's self-esteem, self-discipline, identity, and acceptance toward others. Our philosophy stems from the legacy of constructivist visionaries of learning such as John Dewey, Lev Vygotsky, Jean Piaget and Howard Gardner upon whose teachings the Reggio Emilia Approach to Early Childhood Education is founded. The Reggio Approach envisions children as active protagonists of their own learning; teachers as co-authors of children's learning process as well as authors of their own professional development; and families who co-participate in and are co-responsible for the development of their children.We foresee a learning environment where life-long learning, critical thinking, joy and high self-esteem are honored as capabilities of every child. Our child-centered approach builds upon children's prior experience and knowledge. We believe that children are better at constructing their own knowledge, than we are at teaching them. For this reason, play is highly valued in our school. We believe that play provides children with opportunities to explore the world and use their multiple ways of learning to make decisions in a risk free environment. We celebrate each child's uniqueness and respect each child's cultural diversity and perspective of the world. We take advantage of every child's uniqueness to teach and learn from one another and thus, build a strong community of learners. A child's emotional state is a powerful learning influence. Therefore we believe that each has the right to experience success from the beginning of his/her life. The best way to achieve this is by highlighting children's strengths, which will consequently promote the development of unexplored areas. Our school builds on children's self esteem and emphasizes creating a positive emotional impact to create life-long well-adjusted learners.As adults, we view ourselves as lifelong learners as well. Therefore, the best way to teach children is when children teach us how they learn. In other words, there is not “one right way” to teach all children. Because each child learns differently, our staff will work as a team to approach each child's learning style individually.

Since 1926

In 1926, a powerful hurricane ravished Miami and virtually ended the land boom ushering in the Great Depression long before the actual stock market crash of 1929. Yet our community did not give up after this devastation, instead they picked up the pieces of their beloved city and began rebuilding. Optimism filled the air as construction and repair began to forge the way, and Miami grew to become the international metropolis we know today. It was in the midst of this economic boom that Mrs. Louise Shaffer, originally from Norway and resident of New York made her way south to establish our school in 1926 in the newly born city of Coral Gables; on the corner of Almeria and Ponce De Leon Boulevard. In 1947, our school moved to it's current location on the corner of Red Road and 16th street. In 1955, Dr. and Mrs. Glenn A. Scott purchased the school and decided to focus not only on a strong curriculum but also on teaching good social skills, etiquette, and appropriate behavior. On June 4th, 1971, our school once again changed owners. This time bought by a veterinarian by the name of Dr. Earl Becker and an entrepreneur by the name of Walter Harrison. On January 5, 1995, Dr. Becker sold his share of stock to Walter Harrison and retired in North Florida. Early in 2005, Mrs. Gina Romero joined The Biltmore School family as it's fourth proprieter. An experienced educator and schoolmaster, Mrs. Romero explored the different philosophies of early childhood education while researching emerging trends and techniques. Her quest brought her to the Reggio Emilia philosophy. The deeper she explored Reggio's commitment to children's rights and their recognition of every child's potential to learn, the more eagerly she embraced their concepts and longed to share them with her students. Since 2003, Mrs. Romero has visited Reggio Emilia, continuously receiving inspiration in its philosophy while providing support for her staff by facilitating annual visits to Reggio Emilia for instructors. Once introduced to the Reggio Emilia philosophy, the faculty and staff at the Biltmore School avidly embraced its principles and are continuously researching to gain deeper understanding of the approach. Through this research our instructors are captivated and inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy and are working together in order to leave traces of their understandings throughout the school. The Biltmore School began initially as a preschool, through the years expanded to include all grade levels up to sixth grade, and then reverted to the original preschool format. We celebrate this year's successful implementations of our 6th and 7th grade classes and proudly announce that plans to create a 8th grade class for the 2012-2013 school years are in the final stages of realization.
